A new chapter at the historic Malkasten by the Hofgarten

A new chapter: today the restaurant and bar Lido im Malkasten opens in the historic Malkasten by the Hofgarten. In close collaboration with the artist Rosemarie Trockel, an open-plan concept has been created, turning an interesting place into an unmistakable one. Especially for Lido im Malkasten, Rosemarie Trockel designed a carpet composition measuring an impressive 400 m², based on her world-famous knitted pictures. Restaurant and bar offer a modern take on international cuisine in a relaxed setting: mixing and sharing is the principle. The team around Florian Ohlmann has set itself the goal of encouraging guests to experiment and try things out, and of making the Malkasten Düsseldorf's meeting place for conversation and art.
“With Lido im Malkasten we are realising a completely new concept. Together with Rosemarie Trockel, we have deliberately and consistently created a unity of art and gastronomy that picks up on the legendary past of the Malkasten. In the kitchen and at the bar we have drawn inspiration from all over the world, gathered a great deal of experience and brought the best of the world here to Düsseldorf, to offer our guests an extensive and creative selection. After all, it is our duty to represent Düsseldorf as one of the most liveable cities in the world,” says Robertino Wild, who is opening his third restaurant in Düsseldorf with Lido im Malkasten.
The Malkasten artists' association was founded in 1848 as a place for artists to work, offering room for exchange and a convivial artistic life. Many people will certainly never forget the legendary artists' parties and cake fights that shaped the Malkasten in the last century. Today, 170 years after its founding, the Malkasten is still an institution – far beyond Düsseldorf.
The cooking at Lido Malkasten will therefore be world cuisine, modern but classically inspired. Fundamentally honest products are reduced, in front of the guests' eyes, to their original qualities: quality and flavour. No frills, no compromises. Guests are meant to taste and experiment and share with their companions. There's a choice of small and large dishes, such as omelette blanche, salade niçoise or sushi and tempura. The menu is complemented by meat and fish dishes such as tagliata, veal cutlet Milanese, Guydon and polpette, as well as fjord trout, cod, redfish and much more. Each main course comes with one of numerous side dishes, such as various potato variations or wild broccoli, so that in the end a variety of ingredient combinations come together on the table to form a rich, artful picture full of contrast. Finally, the offering is rounded off by, among other things, the daily changing tartlets from the Lido Pâtisserie.
